HISTORY

Highland games have a long history in Scotland. There is a tradition that clan chiefs held contests as long ago as the 11th century to find their fastest runners and toughest fighting men. This formed the basis of the games as we know them today.

Highland games are held throughout the year in Scotland and other countries as a way of celebrating Scottish culture and heritage, especially that of the Scottish highlands. Certain aspects of the games are so well known they have become symbolic of Scotland, such as the bagpipes, the kilt, and the heavy events, especially the caber toss. While centred on competitions in piping and drumming, dancing, and Scottish heavy athletics, the games also include entertainment and exhibits related to other aspects of Scottish culture.

Highland games today are devoted to preserving and promoting Scottish culture at its best, very often being the main highlight and focus of community life.  They are often the highlight of a visit to Scotland.
